The Rolling Pin Bakery - Love at first sight

As mentioned in my Butter Avenue post, I stumbled upon this bakery, The Rolling Pin, on my way to another bakery (Butter Ave). What caught my eye first was the really awesome name and logo and then my eye was drawn through the window to the red velvet cupcakes. But could I really go to two bakeries in one day?

(How could you ignore that?)

(If you look really close, through the door, to the lower right of the logo you can see the red velvet cupcakes.)

The answer, of course, is yes, yes I could, for research purposes, obviously, so I can spread the word about this amazing little gem of a bakery on Yonge St.  I feel it was fate that I came upon this place. No really, it's relatively new, had I gone to Butter Ave a week earlier, it wouldn't have been opened yet, and the way the sun light shone through the store front window and illuminated what was to become my dessert for the night.

Now I apologize for my lack of interior photos, I was just so excited to have found this place and was thrilled to be getting a cupcake that I completely forgot to take any inside photos. Also from what I can gather from their instagram photos, and from piecing together my memory, they also sell a whole slew of other baked goodies (like donuts...mmm), but again I was "cupcake blind" and didn't really notice anything else (the same thing happened at Butter Ave, I guess I have a bit of the "shiny object syndrome"). Not to worry through I am going back and I will take more photos, and buy more goodies.

(There it is in all it's glory!)
The first thing I noticed when I opened the clam shell was the ever so faint, sweet aroma that hit me (I knew I was in for a treat).

(Full length shot)

(Unwrapped so you can see the vibrant colour)

So there you have a multitude of shots of the cupcake, and I am sure you can see why it caught my eye in the window.

(My other way to eat a cupcake)
If you remember from my first cupcake review, I have another way of eating cupcakes, the sandwich method. But the method you see above is my preferred way of eating them (especially if I haven't tried the bakery before). I prefer it because you get to taste just the cake on it's own, see if it's moist, flavourful, and measure the sweetness level. Then you can dig into the icing with a little bit of cake (because eating a handful of icing on it's own just doesn't feel right ; ) ).

Now down to brass tacks, after all that excitement, was it any good? Yes, it was very good.  Sometimes red velvet cupcakes can be a bit bland tasting, but not this one. It had a very delicate chocolate flavour and not overly sweet (which is good because it is a good balance to the sweet icing). Now I say delicate because it's not punch you in the mouth chocolate, I suppose you could miss it if you were to just wolf it down, but I like to take my time and savour the delight (think about it someone worked hard to make these bad boys from scratch, the least anyone could do, after buying it, is take the time to enjoy it). Delicate does not mean bland. The cake was lovely and moist and fresh. The icing, now I could be wrong, but I don't think it was cream cheese, I think it was vanilla (correct me if I am wrong). I was expecting cream cheese, but I was totally fine with it not being (sometimes some cream cheese icings can be a bit much). It was just a little bit gritty (not a bad thing, even though it kinda sounds like a bad thing, it's not trust me) and sweet, so it offset the smooth elegant cake very nicely. I was so happy with this cupcake that I couldn't wait to tell my friends the next day. I am super excited to go back to this place and try out the rest of their treats. My name is Kate and I approve this bakery 5/5!

Happy cupcake eating!
