Orange is the New Black is BACK! And this is how I celebrated - Part One the Wine

So was anyone else as excited as I was when Netflix released season two of Orange is the New Black? Only problem was, when I started watching I couldn't remember what happened last year. Well I remember she did something bad, but as for what it was and to whom I didn't have the foggiest. So of course I went back to the last episode of season one and watch the end but that only created more questions and I had to keep rewinding back until I could piece together the story. So once I finally figured out what had happened I sat down to watch the new season with my glass of wine, burger and cupcake. This post is going to focus on the wine, because that's a whole lot of stuff to review and I don't want to miss any points.

The wine I chose for this occasion was a red wine from the Cupcake wineries in California. It's called Red Velvet (yum I know) and it's the wine that got me started on red wines. Just a few short years ago I would only drink white (and a few before that I wouldn't touch wine at all, shocking, yes) but the name drew me into this wine. I love cupcakes and if you read the label on the back it says it tastes like eating a" blackberry chocolate cupcake with a mocha coulis" and that it pairs well with BBQ bacon cheeseburger, so how could I not give this a go.

Now the label just says red wine, so from my experience that generally means it is a blend of red wines (I don't know how true that is, but so far for me it is) so I went onto their website to find out what blend of wines it was. It is a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah (all of which they bottle individually as well). I have tried all of those types of wines (not by Cupcake) and have enjoyed them, so it makes sense that putting them all together would be enjoyable as well, but who knew it could be this enjoyable.

I honestly can't remember what I first thought of this wine, but it must have been good because it got me hooked on red wines, and made me much more adventurous in picking out other red wines. Before I would pretty much just stick to a Chardonnay (which is delicious) but now I find myself trying all sorts of wines and saying things like, "Oh I had this lovely little Beaujolais the other night".  But now onto the review of the wine. I really enjoy this wine. It does have a deep berry smell, and on tasting it, I can taste the berries and I can actually taste a hint of chocolate. It is a full bodied wine, but it's also smooth and not too heavy or sweet, and it was definitely the perfect accompaniment to my cheese burger and cupcake. Personally  I think it is an excellent intro to red wines for those who aren't really into reds. It's an easy drinking wine, very middle ground, not too heavy and not too light.

My advice for those who would like to start drinking red wine is, drink with a friend who enjoys reds already, they probably have a better idea of where to start in your journey of reds (or have a arsenal of reds on hand, like myself), and if you really can't drink it, well you can always give it to your friend and not waste it, or turn it into sangria!

Happy Sipping
