Orange Is The New Black - Part two - The Food

Ok so now onto the food. For such a special occasion, like the return of Orange is the New Black, I of course had to have two of my favourite foods; Burgers (I could almost eat a burger everyday and be totally ok with that) and Cupcakes (who doesn't love a handy individual cake).

(Yes that is a Dairy Queen next door and yes I am super excited about the return of the s'more blizzard)

So since I was working over the weekend I decided I wanted to go somewhere not too far away from me, and rather than going to Wendys or McDonalds (don't get me wrong, I still go to those restaurants), I needed something a bit more special. So off to South St Burger I went. It is a chain, and there are quite a few around the city.
(Interior of South St.Burger)

The restaurant is very clean, bright and nicely decorated with pops of orange. Lots of seating with big tables and a couple of booths.  Menu options are as follows; 4oz or 6oz burger, chicken burger, veggie burger, hot dog, NYF fries, poutine (yummy),onion rings, milkshakes and even salads! They have four signature burgers; True North, Nacho, Hawaiian and Mushroom and Swiss. And if that wasn't enough, for the burgers you get your pick of bun; white, whole wheat or gluten free.
(A variety of fresh toppings you can pick from YUM!)
For me I prefer to just get a regular burger with cheese and then add my own toppings (you can add what you want on the signature burgers too). So now for my order, I ordered a 4oz burger on whole wheat (trying to be a bit healthier ;) ) with cheddar cheese and topped with lettuce, curry mayo (they have a nice variety of sauces/mayos) ketchup, cajun onions and pickles (I love pickles, I will order something just because it comes with pickles, no I'm not crazy, ok maybe a little crazy). If you look at the picture above you can see the metal shelf that the burger buns are on, it's heated and if you watch them making your burger you will notice they put the cheese on the wrapper first, so it can melt a bit and then put it the bun.

(It's true, they really are well made burgers)

(Look at how healthy that whole wheat bun looks)
And there it is, my finished burger in all its glory! I like going to South St, partly because they cook the burgers on an open grill instead of a flat top, so it's not overly greasy like some burgers (it makes me think it's a "healthier" option). I also like being able to pick from a wide variety of fresh toppings, some of which are very interesting (curry mayo mmmm). I give this place the Kate's seal of approval 5/5!

(Excellent cake-to-icing ratio)

And now for dessert. I love dessert, cakes, cookies, ice cream, but not pie, I am not a pie person (unless it's pecan, then hand it over), something about cooked mushy fruit just doesn't do it for me (except for rhubarb, ah childhood memories). Cupcakes are probably at the top of my dessert list, what's not to love, they are adorable little personal cakes that come in all sorts of flavours and colours, also I can't be trusted around a whole cake, my serving size is maybe double of what is suggested, and whole cakes are way to easy to go back to and just have a "wee" sliver, well after a whole night of "wee" slivers that's almost half a cake gone. With a cupcake you buy what you need and once you eat it it's gone unless you go back to the store.  I have the same issue with those bags of miniature, unwrapped candies, especially those reese peanut butter cups, I need the time it takes to unwrap one to give my stomach time to tell my brain no more, no wrap means I can pound back a bag of those delicious little devils...wow, sorry,  a bit off topic, back to cupcakes.

I ended up going to Loblaws (grocery store) to get my cupcake, because by the time I got off work any of my local cupcake bakeries were closed. They have a very nice selection of cupcakes, some of which I have tried previously. For this night though, I chose the chocolate cupcake with peanut butter butter-cream frosting.

(Cupcake sandwich, one of two ways I eat them)

The cake it self had a nice chocolate flavour to it, dense and not too sweet, but it was a bit dry (maybe from sitting in a display case). The frosting was pretty good.  It again was not overly sweet, was smooth, and had a nice peanut butter taste which coated your mouth the way peanut butter does. Overall it was an ok cupcake. I enjoyed it, but I've had better, I like my cakes to be a bit more moist than this one was. It may have just been this batch because I've had cupcakes from Loblaws before and I don't remember thinking they were dry, but it was a different Loblaws (Bayview Village).  Would I buy it again, maybe if I was in a pinch and in desperate need of a cupcake, otherwise I would probably go to another bakery to get my fix.

I hope you are all enjoying season two of Orange is the New Black, I am attempting not to binge watch it. I'm trying to just watch one episode a week (sorta like savouring a meal) so I am still just on episode one!

Happy Eating and Watching!
