Viking Bakery - Bringing back awesome memories one baked good at a time

Some of you may know of my great love of Iceland, so just imagine how excited I was to read a Toronto Star article describing the newly opened Icelandic bakery, Viking Bakery. Truth be told, it took me much longer than expected to make my way to this magical little place, but it did take me two subways to get there.

Viking Bakery is located on Danforth and Woodbine, and trust me, it's worth the trip. If you've been to Iceland, than you are probably familiar with the plethora of delicious baked goods that beautiful country has to offer, and should be just as excited as I was to find this place.

The Bakery itself is small, with a few small tables and chairs, and a counter filled with everything from kleinur, to cinnamon rolls, to sandwiches, and everything in between. I was greeted by a man whom I believe is the owner. He was very friendly, and we had a nice little chat. The girl working behind the counter was also very friendly, and helpful. It took me a bit to decide what I wanted, I very easily could have ordered one of everything, but summer is coming up and that means shorts, tanks, and bathing suits, so I behaved, and lets be honest, you never know if the product is going to be good, so I really didn't want to blow a bunch of money on something that may not be good. Just to be clear, this place is good, VERY GOOD.

So after perusing the counter for a minute I decided on getting some kleinur, viking cookies, and some oatmeal cookies. I got enough to share with my co-workers, cause hey this blog can't always just be my opinion (except for the oatmeal cookies, those were all for me).

(Look at all of those amazing treats)

(Oatmeal cookies...so good)

(Viking cookie)
The viking cookie, other than looking adorably awesome, tasted pretty good. It's like a gingersnap, but I will warn you, it is a bit spicy so if you really don't like a gingery/spicy ginger cookie, maybe skip these. They are thin, and crispy. I enjoyed them, and I'd say the majority of my co-workers enjoyed them, and trust me if there is one thing my co-workers and I know, it's good sweets when we taste them.

(Kleinur)
The kleinur is like a plain doughnut, but please don't think of a certain fast food chains plain doughnut (you know the one). This one from Viking Bakery, unlike ones you get elsewhere, is moist, flavourful, fluffy, and just the right amount of sweetness. When I think of Iceland, I think of kleinur. My co-workers also enjoyed these, even though they were up against some pretty stiff doughnut competition (look for my Von Doughnuts blog post in a little bit). They may look bland, and boring, but you would be missing out if you were to skip over these.

Now I know what you are thinking, where are the oatmeal cookies, well it appears in all my excitement, I managed to eat both cookies before taking a picture (they are in the second pic of the counters seen above). These cookies are awesome. The oatmeal part is crisp, and oatmealy (not in a gross way), the filling is creamy, fluffy, and perfectly sweet, the chocolate, is sweet and smooth. The cookie overall, isn't overly sweet, has a very interesting mouth feel (it's crispy, fluffy, and creamy), and I found one was more than enough for me. I'm sad that I don't have anymore right now.

It's a good thing this place isn't closer to me, cause I could see myself in there everyday to pick up a cookie or two. I will be back for sure, especially when my hubby gets back, cause he's going to want some Icelandic treats.

So there you have it, Viking Bakeries, it's a place I think everyone should go at least once. They are different, so go try them (I love that slogan).

(Go try them, you won't be sorry)

Happy Eating!
