The Rolling Pin Part 2 - I just can't get enough!

Ok I know, two posts on the same place within a month, really? Aren't there tons of other places out there I could/should be blogging about. Of course there are, but I did promise to go back and get some interior shots, and I really, really like this place!

If you read my Chez Laurent post, you would know that myself and two of my friends headed down to the bakery for a little pre/post dinner snack (it was suppose to be pre, but we may have gotten a tad carried away and decided it would be best to save the rest for a post dinner treat aka dessert). I know, you are probably thinking it was my idea, but it wasn't, it was my food confidant B's idea (one of the only people I know who truly understands my love/passion for food), and of course I am not going to say no, so off the three of us went.

(Awesome logo)

*Correction to my first Rolling Pin post. I said, I didn't think that it was a cream cheese frosting they used for the red velvet, but upon checking the website, they do indeed, so either my taste buds were off that day (most probable scenario), or they didn't use the cream cheese, either way it was still phenomenal (and you betcha I am going to get myself some more of those bad boys!!)

(Donuts, and bars, and cupcakes, oh my!)
(And also muffins, and cookies and loaves)

So when you walk in you are greeted by a lovely display case filled with all sorts of amazing looking baked goods.  We got to the bakery about an hour before they closed, so the shelves weren't as full as they were when I first went there, but that's a good thing, it means that the stuff is fresh and popular.

The first display case is filled with all sorts of donuts, cupcakes, bars, tarts and muffins. And then the one by the cash is filled with cakes, pies and macarons. The macaron flavours were really interesting, and I was tempted to buy the whole lot of them, but I was able to control myself.

(A rainbow of macarons)
(Cakes,pies and even sandwiches)
(Cute and colourful menu)
The bakery itself, is stark white, with really bold punches of colour, it really is a beautiful place. It's spotless (as you can see below), and the girls there are super friendly.

(Shot of the tin ceiling)
It's the details in this place, like the tin ceiling, with the red pendant lights, that makes it a really unique place.
(Display shelves)
I really liked the display shelves, it's not cluttered, very well thought out, and it's filled with coffee! You can also see in the bottom middle of the picture the water jug that you can help yourself to. It might seem like a small detail, but not a lot of places offer that, and it's a nice touch.
(Where the magic happens)

They were in the process of making butter tarts, I could almost just pull up a chair and watch them bake.

(Nice tables, with colourful chairs)
There was a cake tasting going on in the back of this picture, and yes I was slightly jealous!
(Interesting wall display, and a bathroom!)
This wall was actually spotted by my other friend, and I have to agree with her, it really is a nice touch.

So after wondering around and chatting with the staff for like 15-20 min, we finally were able to choose our treats. It was a tough decision, but we were able to do it. The first thing was the donuts. If you go on the website (The Rolling Pin)  the donuts look amazing, so obviously we had to try them. There were only a few kinds left, but they sounded delicious, so we decided on the Black Forest and Custard Bomb. We also picked two bars, a seven layer bar and I believe a chocolate chip cookie bar. Then last, but not least, we selected a chocolate chip cookie cupcake (there was going to be five of us going out, so of course we had to pick five things, did we need five treats, yes absolutely!) Our treats all got packed up into a cute box and we were ready to go. I will note that as we were paying there was a basket of bread by the cash. They were trying out a sourdough gruyere bread and it was ah-maz-ing, fingers crossed they make it a keeper! So off we went with our box of goodies to meet up with the others and share our sweet sweet finds.

(The goodies themselves)

So starting with the bars, the seven layer was really good. It was like a hello dolly with the coconut and chocolate and a brown sugar/butterscotchy taste. The next was the chocolate chip cookie bar, it had a shortbread type base to it. It wasn't overly sweet but it was buttery and melted in your mouth. Again it was good, but I'm not normally a big "bar" person, but if it were put in front of me I would eat it. The cupcake was good, not as good as the red velvet I had previously, but good. The chocolate chips seemed to be all at the bottom, the icing was sweet and a bit gritty (again not a bad thing, but I know there are some people that do not like gritty icing, I do, so it's not a problem for me!). I probably wouldn't get that particular cupcake again, but I enjoyed it while I was eating it.

Now for the donuts, these were my favourites by far, and it would be tough for me to pick a winner between the two we had. The black forest had a nice fresh, moist donut base to it, smothered in a chocolate topping that wasn't too sweet, and topped with whipped cream, cherries and chocolate shavings. The filling was a tart cherry jammy type, that really counter balanced any sweetness from the rest of the donut. The custard bomb, was  very simple, yet very tasty. Again the donut base was fresh and moist and this time it was covered in sugar. It was filled and topped with a custard that was smooth, not too sweet and really tasty. I know I will be back again and again to try all the donuts, and maybe a couple more cupcakes and macarons, for research purposes!

Have I said how much I really, really love this place. Not only is it close to me, it's clean, inviting, has a friendly crew and is filled with all sorts of yummy treats. I highly suggest checking this place out, and maybe even making it a regular stop for all your sweet tooth cravings. I don't think I even have to say it, this place definitely gets my stamp of approval 5/5!!

Happy Eating!
